Case Study_ Joshua Tree_Cladding_Decking_6

When building a home, much of the budget is often allocated to interior design choices and finishes, from sleek kitchens to polished flooring and luxurious bathrooms. However, one essential feature that frequently takes a backseat is the deck.

Often considered an afterthought, the decking project tends to depend on whether there’s any budget left over after the main build. Yet, in New Zealand’s outdoor-loving culture, a well-designed deck can be a cornerstone of the home, offering space to relax, entertain and enjoy the country’s stunning natural landscapes.

Understanding the cost of decking is crucial for homeowners looking to plan ahead, ensuring the money spent is worthwhile and the chosen material is durable, long-lasting and low-maintenance.

What to consider when choosing the right decking material?

  • Cost In Use – What is the expected cost of the product over its lifetime? Does it require recoating or staining every couple of years? How much will this recoating or staining cost over time?
  • Maintenance – What maintenance is required?  How often is maintenance required? What is the cost to maintain the product?
  • Installation - How easy is it to install the decking? How does the time it takes to install it affect labour costs?
  • Location - Where is your home located? Is the decking material designed to withstand specific New Zealand climates?

Below we’ll discuss common decking materials, and the costs involved in maintenance requirements, to see how they stack up against our durable and low maintenance Millboard Mineral Decking product.

Please note: the below pricing includes GST and is approximate per m2 as of December 2024. Pricing may vary depending on the supplier. Installation and labour are not included in the pricing provided. Restaining / repainting costs listed (where applicable) also include GST.

Millboard Mineral Decking

Millboard is a high-performance timber alternative decking product, crafted with a composition of mineral limestone, that is not only durable, but weather-resistant and low maintenance.

Millboard planks have an authentic wood look and feel, requiring only minimal maintenance over the lifespan of the product (occasional cleaning with soapy water). Due to its wood-free composition, Millboard resists algal growth, won’t rot or warp, and is perfectly suited to withstand New Zealand’s demanding outdoor environments.

Millboard decking features a durable Lastane® surface layer that is both non-porous, preventing spills from leaving stains on the boards, and slip-resistant even in wet or icy conditions. Additionally, its UV-stable finish ensures the boards retain their colour and resist fading under prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight.

Millboard decking can be installed the same way as natural timber decking, however due to the Lastane® surface layer, it provides the added benefit of hidden screws, so the boards show no visible fixings for a cleaner look.

Available in two collections, Enhanced Grain (moulded from prime grade oak for a smoother finish) and Weathered Oak (moulded from 100-year-old reclaimed oak for a more rustic look), Millboard decking has a style and colour to suit any application.

Price:
Enhanced Grain (176 x 32mm): $348 per m2 (includes GST)
Weathered Oak (200 x 32mm): $380 per m2 (includes GST)

Residential warranty: 25 years
Lifespan: 35 – 40 years

Kwila Decking

Kwila decking is a robust and visually appealing hardwood, originating from Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Known for its water resistance, it performs well in wet conditions and can be finished with stain, oil or left to weather naturally.

While Kwila is inherently resistant to decay and pests, proper sealing and upkeep are essential to prevent rot. Regular cleaning (every 6 months) combined with annual staining, help preserve its rich colour and protect it from moisture damage. Another thing to note is that Kwila will need a second application of stain 3-6 months after installation and initial staining.

Due to its density, Kwila can be more challenging to work with compared to other timbers, but its durability makes it a popular choice for long-lasting decks.

Hardwood decking such as Kwila is more labour intensive to install due to the amount of time that is put in to fixing the screws, as holes need to be pre-drilled and counter sunk.

Price:
Kwila (140×19mm) – $89 per m2 (includes GST. Pricing dependent on availability and demand – prices may increase)
Staining: $20 per m2 (material cost)
Supply and required staining: $109 per m2 (includes GST)

Warranty: none with timber products
Lifespan: 15 – 25 years

Pine Decking

Pine decking is a cost-effective and versatile softwood option, widely used for its availability and affordability. While not as durable as hardwood alternatives, it can last for several years with regular maintenance, making it a practical choice for budget-conscious homeowners or temporary installations.

This material is commonly treated with chemical preservatives to enhance its longevity, though care must be taken to prevent structural issues like bending or warping. Pine decks require restaining every 1-2 years, though high-traffic areas may need more frequent attention to maintain their appearance and prevent structural damage.

Price:
Pine (140×32mm) – $50 per m2 (includes GST)
Staining: $20 per m2 (material cost)
Supply and required staining: $70 per m2 (includes GST)

Warranty: none with timber products
Lifespan: 15 years

Vitex Decking

Vitex decking is a robust and water-resistant hardwood, well-suited for outdoor spaces, especially in coastal regions. Known for its durability and minimal maintenance needs, it offers long-lasting performance. Vitex is also a sustainable choice and easy to work with, making it an environmentally conscious option.

In New Zealand, periodic restaining is recommended to preserve its appearance and longevity, although the wood’s density means restaining is typically only required every 7-10 years. While naturally resistant to weathering and tannin bleeding, routine cleaning is recommended to keep it looking its best.

Price:
Vitex (140×19mm) – $105/m2 (includes GST)
Staining: $20 per m2 (material cost)
Supply and required staining: $125 per m2 (includes GST)

Warranty: none with timber products
Lifespan: 15 – 25 years

Garapa Decking

Garapa decking is a durable hardwood favoured for outdoor projects due to its rich, natural colour, insect resistance and long lifespan. Harvested sustainably in South America, this wood is easy to work with and is less likely to splinter or warp, providing a safe and comfortable surface.

To maintain its appearance, Garapa requires an initial stain to achieve the desired colour, followed by restaining every 1–2 years, depending on usage and climate. Regular cleaning is also essential to remove debris, mould and mildew, ensuring the deck remains in excellent condition over time.

Price:
Garapa (140×19mm) – $104/m2 (includes GST)
Staining: $20 per m2 (material cost)
Supply and required staining: $124 per m2 (includes GST)

Warranty: none with timber products
Lifespan: up to 30 years (dependent on regular maintenance)
