Choosing the right timber flooring can transform the look and feel of your home. Together with colour and finish, one of the biggest design decisions is whether to go with wide-plank or standard-plank flooring. Both options offer unique styles and benefits, but understanding their differences can help you make the best choice for your space.

Wide-Plank Flooring: Bold and Contemporary

Wide-planks in the Forté offering are above 220mm, offering a broad, uninterrupted surface. This style highlights the natural grain, texture and colour variations of the timber, creating a sense of spaciousness and elegance.

Pros of wide-plank flooring:

  • Creates a visually open, seamless look

  • Highlights timber grain and natural character

  • Ideal for large or open-plan rooms

Considerations:

  • Requires precise subfloor preparation

  • Can expand and contract more than narrower planks

  • Often more expensive due to larger board size

We recommended:

Indus:

As well as boasting a generous 240mm width, Indus also has subtle bevels that softens the definition between planks, creating a seamless and flowing space.

Atelier:

Atelier features generous 220mm or 260mm wide and 2200mm long planks*, creating a spacious, sophisticated look that elevates the visual appeal of your interiors.

*Atelier is also available in Chevron and Herringbone format, for which widths are 120mm.

Villa:

Inspired by heritage style architecture, Villa has distinctively long (2400mm) and wide (240mm) planks*. Its unique grain pattern and tactile finish that makes it well suited to classic interiors.

*Villa is also available in Herringbone format, for which widths are 120mm.

Artiste Grande:

Artiste Grande celebrates the beauty of age and imperfection, with a rustic grade finish that gives an authentic and time-worn aesthetic. With a 250mm width it's one of our most generously proportioned planks.*

*Atelier is also available in Chevron and Herringbone format, for which widths are 120mm.

Standard-Plank Flooring: Classic and Versatile

Standard planks in the Forte range are between 150mm-200mm. They provide a balanced, timeless aesthetic that suits both small and large rooms, and their narrower width allows for intricate patterns like herringbone, parquet, or chevron.

Pros of standard-plank flooring:

  • Easier to install and handle

  • Masks minor subfloor imperfections

  • Versatile for different interior styles and layouts

Considerations:

  • More seams, so less continuity across the floor

  • Grain and natural patterns are less pronounced than wide planks

We recommend:

Loft:

The Loft Collection has been meticulously designed to meet the demands of high-traffic spaces. Its 193mm wide plank measurement makes it a versatile and forgiving option for multi-residential and commercial interiors.

Haven:

Haven is offered in a 190mm width. With 11 modern colours and the option of 14mm, 15mm or 21mm thick planks (as well as Herringbone and Chevron formats), Haven offers endless possibilities to ensure your design vision is brought to life.

Moda:

Moda comes in a 220mm width and is available in 12 versatile colours. Its extra-matte finish provides a natural, oil-like appearance with an enhanced water-resistance barrier for better protection against spills.

Choosing the Right Option for Your Home

  • Room size: Wide planks are ideal for open spaces, while standard planks suit smaller rooms.

  • Design style: Wide planks for modern, minimalist interiors; standard planks for traditional or patterned designs.

  • Maintenance: Both options are durable when properly installed, especially in engineered timber, which handles humidity and temperature changes better than solid timber.

Wide-plank and standard-plank timber flooring each offer distinct benefits, with the choice ultimately coming down to your own taste, space and design vision.
