Our commitment to sustainable and responsible business practices
Blog |
Laying your new timber floor is like opening the first page of a new story. Each plank sets the tone for what’s to come: a family growing into their home, a business taking an exciting next step, or a designer shaping a space with intention. What drives our passion for timber is knowing it forms the foundation for so many of life’s unfolding stories. But that journey doesn’t begin at installation.
From the forest it grew in, to the hands that shaped it, every piece of timber carries a legacy of care. Its transformation from raw material to refined surface reflects a chain of responsibility – one we’re proud to uphold. At every stage, we make decisions rooted in sustainability, integrity, and respect for the people and environments behind our products.
Through our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Policy and Wood Sourcing Policy, we foster a culture of continuous and meaningful improvement across all touchpoints of our business.
Learn more about the key ways we’re turning that commitment into action to ensure that the beauty of our timber is matched by the values behind it.
Responsible Wood Sourcing: From Forest to Floor
There's no timber without healthy forests, so for us sustainability starts with the raw materials. We've made a strong commitment to sourcing timber responsibly, with our Wood Sourcing Policy ensuring all timber used in our products aligns with the highest international standards, including FSC® and PEFC certifications.
These certifications guarantee that forests are managed in a way that protects biodiversity, respects indigenous rights, and supports local communities.
Our goals include:
- Eliminating high-risk and illegal wood sources
- Promoting FSC-certified tropical timber only
- Expanding the use of recycled and reclaimed wood
- Helping suppliers work toward FSC or PEFC Chain of Custody certification
We also comply fully with the New Zealand Building Code, Australian timber standards, and international timber trade laws, ensuring that our products meet the highest ethical and legal standards.
What is FSC or PEFC Chain of Custody Certification?
FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) are globally recognised organisations that promote responsible forest management. When a timber product carries FSC or PEFC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification, it means that every step of its journey – from forest to final product – has been independently verified to meet strict environmental, social, and ethical standards.
Chain of Custody certification ensures:
- The timber comes from responsibly managed forests or recycled sources.
- The product has been tracked through every stage of processing, manufacturing, and distribution.
- There is no mixing with uncertified or illegally sourced wood along the supply chain.
For consumers, designers, and builders, CoC certification provides assurance that the timber product supports sustainable forestry, protects ecosystems, and respects the rights of workers and local communities.
How Do I Know if My Supplier’s Chain of Custody Certification is Legitimate?
If you're unsure about a supplier’s FSC or PEFC certification, you can check or verify it using one of these steps:
- Check the Certification Database
Look for the company or organisation making the FSC or PEFC claim on the FSC Public Dashboard or PEFC Find Certified database.
- 2. Check for the FSC or PEFC Logo and Code
Certified products should have either the FSC or PEFC logo prominently displayed on the product packaging or label. Additionally, there will be a certification code, which is a unique identifier for the certified organization.
- 3. Check the Sales Documents
Certified companies of both schemes are required to have their claims, certificate numbers and trademark license codes on their sales documents.
Our Broader CSR Commitments: People, Planet, Progress
Our CSR Policy goes beyond environmental responsibility – it reflects our holistic approach to doing business. We align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aim to make a positive impact at every level.
Our key commitments include:
- Fair labor practices and equal opportunities for all staff
- Employee growth and development in a safe, inclusive workplace
- Environmental stewardship, including waste reduction and resource efficiency
- Community support through engagement and contributions to local initiatives
- Transparency and open communication with stakeholders
We view CSR not as a separate initiative, but as a core part of how we work and grow.
Continuous Improvement: Never Settling
Sustainability is not a fixed destination but a continual journey. That’s why we regularly review and evolve our sourcing and CSR strategies. We invest in:
- Regular supplier evaluations
- Staff training on responsible sourcing
- Ongoing improvements to our environmental and social performance
We're committed to transparency, making our policies publicly available and ensuring everyone – our team, partners, and customers – understands what we stand for.
